Description | Between 1898 and 1934, the Philippines was led by the United States of America as a condition of the Treaty of Paris, transferring power from Spain at the close of the Spanish-American War. During this period, one of the coins produced was the 1903 Philippines Peso featuring the words United States of America on its reverse side encircling an eagle with outspread wings perched impressively on a shield of stars and stripes. On the front of the coin is a Filipina in a flowing dress placing a hammer on an anvil. The Mount Mayon volcano is billowing in the background, with One Peso and Filipinas inscribed around its perimeter. In 1934, the country was granted commonwealth status and then granted complete independence in 1945 after ten years of self-government. The 1902 Peso is made of 90% silver, has a diameter of 26mm, and weighs 20 grams. | Properties |
