The obverse has "Pro Bono Publico" (Latin for "For the Public Good,") around the outside edge of the field, a five-pointed star with a Stars and Stripes shield on it in the center, and 1863 at the bottom Note lighter area on right side of obverse Both sides have off-center strikes, more pronounced on the obverse Civil War tokens are fascinating bits of history that were privately minted approximately 150 years ago to make up for a severe shortage of government-issued coinage during the war
