The obverse with disjointed horse, galloping left
The reverse side with the devolved head of the god Apollo
Coin production began in Britain around the end of the second century BC making this example one of the first coins to be minted in the British isles
This coin was struck from rose gold, a particularly attractive alloy of approximately 40% gold, 40% copper and 20% silver, much loved and admired by the Celts, as evidenced by this beautiful coin
Although typically Celtic in style the designs for both the obverse and reverse of these issues were derived from the earlier Macedonian gold staters of King Philip II
These well known and traded Greek coins show the head of Apollo on the obverse and a two horse chariot on the reverse
For their own coins the Celtic die engravers chose Apollo's hair as the focus for the obverse depiction and the chariot became a single, abstract horse for the reverse
