The 2008 American Buffalo Gold coin is a 24-karat 1 Troy Ounce bullion coin struck by the United States Mint
Extremely popular among both collectors and bullion buyers, the coin is based on the famous Indian Head nickel minted from 1913-1938
It has gained its nickname from the American Bison on the reverse side of the design
When this coin was first released in 2006 it marked the first time ever that the United States Government has minted pure (.9999) 24-karat gold coins for the public

The obverse design features an American Indian, which is believed to be a composite of three different American Indian chiefs
